SEVAI: Society for Education, Village Action and Improvement

SEVAI (Society for Education, Village Action and Improvement) is a voluntary service organization working for the integrated development of the rural poor. The objective of SEVAI is to develop sustainable communities and has put forth its best effort towards accomplishing this aim since its inception in 1975. SEVAI focuses its services in the villages and slums of Trichirapalli and the coastal Nagapptinam Area through empowerment of the rural poor, active involvement of target community, in all phases of program like planning, decision making, implementation and the evaluation process.

Society for Education Village Action and Improvement ? SEVAI was established on the 7th October 1975. The founder of SEVAI Mr. Govindaraju initiated an Integrated Village School for Normal and Handicapped children and also promoting Micro-Credit Schemes for rural Self-Help Women Groups towards their socio ? economic upliftment in Pettavaithalai. After elaborate consultation and discussions with social minded persons, a proper legal Voluntary Organization its name society for Education, Village Action and Improvement (SEVAI) is at present working in 362 village Communities in Trichirappalli, Karur, Erode and Nagapattinam Districts of Tamilnadu, covering a population about One Hundred Thousand.

 SEVAI is the biggest Non Governmental Organization in Tamilnadu. It counts 54 centres located in Tiruchirapalli, Karur and Nagapatinam Districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal district of Pondicherry UT.

Those centres cover a population of 100,000 persons. 4200 Self Help Groups have been helped by SEVAI since 1999. SEVAI educates 1400 children in its three schools.

SEVAI employes 212 persons.

Below is a graph showing the distribution of SEVAI actions. Self Help Groups take an important part in SEVAI activities since it is a good way for people to overcome misery.

Objectives: 

  • To empower the rural poor people through Community Education through collective functionaries of people’s organization and strengthening the same.

  • To promote functional education.

  • To create a better living environment and atmosphere through self help housing, sanitation, drinking water and other infrastructure facilities as a Package approach.

  • To undertake educational projects like pre-primary, primary, inclusive education, non-formal and adult education.

  • Imparting literacy for illiterate population of the target area.

  • To impart vocational education as like skills.

  • Child labor elimination through education intervention towards equivalency education program.

  • To promote appropriate cost-effective rural technologies and skills for socio-economic upliftment.

  • To promote socio-cultural values to develop local culture and talents for community harmony.

  • To enhance local economy through imparting skills training and formation of work collectives and rural youth to commit themselves to rural development and self help towards sustainability.

  • To Up-lift and empower the vulnerable groups – women and children, handicapped and needy community.
